I am Eunkwang Seo, a PhD candidate in Strategic Management at the Gies College of Business, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I will be joining the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University as an Assistant Professor starting from Aug 2021.
Focusing on innovation and strategic human capital, my research seeks to understand how firms strategize on human talent to foster innovation and gain competitive advantages. My dissertation examines the relationship between within-firm collaboration among inventors and their inter-firm mobility. Utilizing quasi-experimental settings, I show that firms’ efforts to create more value through collaboration can increase inventors’ mobility and subsequent knowledge spillovers, ultimately reducing their ability to capture more value from their knowledge assets. I also find that employee mobility barriers can facilitate collaboration within firms by mitigating the concerns for value capture.
My dissertation research has received a number of grants and awards, including SRF Dissertation Grant, SMS Best Interdisciplinary Paper Award (Strategic Human Capital IG), AOM Best Paper Proceedings (STR Division), SERI Best Doctoral Student Paper Award, and PDMA Dissertation Proposal Competition Award (first place).
